What cabinet painting actually is

Painting cabinets is not painting walls. The doors and drawer fronts come off and go to our spray booth; the frames are prepared and finished in your kitchen behind full masking. What goes on is 2K polyurethane — two-component, catalysed, the system high-end furniture manufacturers and automotive refinishers use. It cures hard, shrugs off kitchen cleaners, and does not yellow the way a water-based finish does.

It costs more in materials than a tin of cabinet enamel, and it is worth it after a few years of daily use. That is the whole argument for doing this properly rather than cheaply.

It suits a kitchen where the boxes and the door profiles are still sound and only the colour has dated. If the doors themselves are the problem — the style, the damage, the way the room is laid out — painting puts a good finish on the wrong thing, and refacing is the better answer. We will tell you that at the consultation rather than after the deposit.

What actually happens to your doors

The disruptive part is short because the slow part happens at our shop, not in your house.

Step one

Doors come off

Doors and drawer fronts are labelled, removed and taken to the shop, and you choose the colour from painted samples on the day. For the fortnight they are away you keep a working, doorless kitchen — boxes, sink and appliances all in use.
Step two

Filled and sanded

Dents, chips and old caulk gaps filled, then sanded and primed. A smooth finish amplifies a flaw rather than hiding it.
Step three

Checked under the booth lighting

The booth is lit low across the surface, which shows what a ceiling light hides. Anything it finds goes back a step.
Step four

Sprayed and cured

Two-component polyurethane, sprayed in the booth and left to cure properly rather than rushed back.
Step five

Frames sprayed, then refit

The frames are sprayed in your kitchen behind sealed containment, and we ask you out of the house for those two or three days because the finish is solvent-based. Then fronts rehung, every door aligned and every closer tested. About five days, and the kitchen is yours again that evening.
