How to Stop Painted Cabinets Chipping in Oakville
Chipping and flaking look similar and mean opposite things. One is damage. The other is the finish telling you it was never properly attached.
What chipping actually tells you
Not all damage is the same, and the difference decides whether anything can be done about it.
A chip is impact — something hit the door and took a piece of finish with it. It has ragged edges and it is usually where a door meets a handle, a bin, or a child's toy. Any finish can be chipped by a hard enough knock, and a chip is repairable.
A flake is adhesion failure, and it is a different thing entirely. It lifts cleanly, in a sheet, taking a perfect impression of the surface underneath — because it was never bonded to it. Flaking is not damage; it is the finish reporting that the preparation underneath it failed.
The clean release is the diagnosis. A properly bonded coating tears when it fails. One that comes away intact was resting on grease or wax the whole time.
What actually stops it
Three things, in order of how much they matter.
- Preparation, by a distance. A finish grips or it does not, and that is decided before any colour is applied. Degreasing that lifts wax rather than smearing it, then sanding to a uniform surface. Nothing later compensates for this being skipped.
- The material. A catalysed 2K polyurethane cures by chemical reaction into a cross-linked film, which is substantially harder than anything that dries by evaporation. Water-based acrylic on cabinet doors is the standard cause of finishes that look tired in three years.
- Cure time. Hard is not the same as dry. A catalysed finish reaches handling hardness in hours and full hardness over days, and cupboards loaded on day one against a finish that has not finished curing is a self-inflicted version of the problem.
Where chipping starts, and why there
It is always the same places, which is itself informative.
Around the handles, along the bottom rail of wall cabinets, at the edge of the door beside the dishwasher, and on the drawer front nearest the hob. Those are the four surfaces hands and steam reach most.
If a kitchen is failing in those places and nowhere else, the finish is probably sound and what you have is wear. If it is lifting in places nothing touches — the inside edge of a door, the top of an end panel — that is adhesion, and the whole run will follow.
What can be repaired and what cannot
Worth knowing before paying anyone to fix it.
A chip in a sound finish can be filled and touched in. It will not be invisible on a gloss level above satin, but it will be close, and it does not spread.
Flaking cannot be touched in. Anything applied over a finish that is letting go will let go with it, usually faster, because the repair adds weight to a film that is already unattached. The honest answer there is to remove the failed coating and start from the substrate.
That is the real cost of poor preparation, and it is why the step gets the attention it does here: the second attempt costs more than the first would have, because somebody has to undo the first one.
