Quartz vs Granite in Toronto

One is manufactured and one is quarried, and nearly every practical difference between them follows from that single fact rather than from quality.

Made versus found

Engineered quartz is roughly ninety percent ground natural quartz bound in resin with pigment, pressed and cured into slabs. Granite is cut out of the ground, sliced and polished.

That is the whole difference, and everything below is a consequence of it rather than a separate fact to remember.

Manufactured means consistent, non-porous, and available in colours that do not occur in nature. Quarried means every slab is unique, somewhat porous, and limited to what the earth produced.

Neither is better. They are different products that happen to sit in the same place in a kitchen, and the useful question is which one suits how you live rather than which one wins.

Sealing, which is the difference you actually live with

Granite is porous. How porous depends on the stone — some are nearly as tight as quartz, some drink oil visibly — and porous stone absorbs what is spilled on it.

The management for that is a penetrating sealer, reapplied periodically. It is not difficult and it is not expensive, and it is the single most common thing people stop doing. A granite worktop that has gone three years without sealing near a hob will show it, and an oil stain that has soaked in is not something you wipe off.

Quartz is non-porous because the resin fills what would otherwise be open structure. Nothing penetrates, nothing needs sealing, ever. Red wine, olive oil, turmeric and coffee sit on the surface until wiped.

In a family kitchen that difference is the whole decision more often than any other consideration on this page. In a quiet kitchen where somebody genuinely will reseal on schedule, it matters far less.

Consistency, and why it cuts both ways

A quartz sample is reliable. The slab that arrives will look like the piece you chose from, because it was manufactured to. That makes choosing straightforward and it makes a large kitchen with two slabs match across the seam.

A granite sample tells you the stone's general character and nothing about your particular slab. Movement, veining and colour vary across a single sheet, let alone between two. This is why granite has to be chosen at the yard, looking at the actual slabs reserved for the job.

For some people that is the appeal — no two granite kitchens are alike, and the stone has a depth that a manufactured product does not quite reproduce even when it is imitating stone.

For others it is a risk they would rather not carry, particularly on a large run where a bold vein has to land somewhere.

Heat, and the one thing quartz cannot do

Granite came out of the ground hot and does not care about a pan. Within any temperature a kitchen produces, it is effectively immune.

Quartz is not, and this is its genuine weakness. The resin binding it softens and scorches well below the temperature of a pan lifted straight off a burner, and a scorch mark in quartz is permanent — it cannot be sanded, filled or polished out.

Trivets are therefore not a suggestion with quartz, they are a condition of ownership. Most people adapt within a week and never think about it again. A few households know themselves well enough to know they will not, and for those granite is the safer material regardless of the sealing.

There is a related and smaller point about sunlight: some pale quartzes shift colour under years of direct sun, which is worth knowing for a south-facing island under large windows. Granite does not.

What we recommend, and when we do not

Quartz, for most kitchens, and the reason is maintenance rather than performance. It asks nothing of you except trivets, and asking nothing is what people actually want from a worktop over ten years.

Granite where the stone itself is the point — where somebody wants movement and depth that engineered material approximates rather than has — or where a household cooks in a way that puts hot pans down without thinking, or where a particular slab has simply been fallen in love with. Those are all good reasons and we specify it happily.

What we will not do is tell you one is better. The material is a smaller decision than the seam positions, the edge profile and the overhang support — and those are the ones we spend the design visit on.

How either one reaches your kitchen

Whichever material wins, the path is the same — the slab is specified with you, templated digitally once the old top is off, cut by a named fabricator and fitted against the cabinet work. Reading what happens between choosing a slab and using the worktop covers the seams, the edge profile and the overhang support, which are the decisions that shape the result far more than the choice between these two materials does.

The case against the usual winner

Quartz wins this comparison for most kitchens and that is not the same as it having no drawbacks. It has two real vulnerabilities that granite does not share, and both are worth knowing before you commit rather than after a pan has been set down. Reading where engineered stone genuinely falls short is the honest other half of this page, and occasionally it sends somebody back to natural stone for good reasons.

Common questions about choosing between them

Which is more expensive?
They overlap heavily. An entry-level granite undercuts most quartz; a premium veined quartz costs more than mid-range granite. The slab decides the price, not the material category, which is why we take people to a yard rather than quoting a number against a word.
Does granite really need sealing?
Yes, and it is the difference people feel most. Granite is porous to varying degrees and needs resealing periodically — the interval depends on the stone and how it is used. Quartz is non-porous and never needs it. A busy family kitchen is where that matters most.
Which is harder?
Quartz, marginally, though both are far beyond what ordinary kitchen use will scratch. Your knives lose to either one long before either loses to a knife. Hardness is the least useful thing to choose on and it is what most comparisons lead with.
Can either one be repaired?
Granite chips can often be filled convincingly, because the stone has natural variation to hide the repair in. Quartz is more consistent, so a repair shows more readily against it — and a heat scorch in quartz cannot be repaired at all.
Will the slab look like the sample?
With quartz, yes — it is manufactured to be consistent. With granite, no, and that is the point of it. Every granite slab is its own object, so it has to be seen and chosen rather than picked from a swatch.
