   Look at what was already good here. White quartz, a glass mosaic backsplash, hardwood, a proper hood. None of that was the problem — the espresso was, and it was making an expensive kitchen read a decade older than it is.

   One handle, laid on the counter it will live beside, before anything is ordered. It is the cheapest test there is and it is the one people skip — hardware is chosen against the stone, not against a photograph of somebody else's kitchen.

   Same island, same counters, same backsplash, same floor. The doors left for ten days and came back a different colour, and the room reads twice the size. Nothing structural was touched and nothing was thrown away.
