Milton is the unusual one on our list. Most towns hold houses from every decade mixed street by street, and quoting means guessing which decade you are looking at before anything else. Here the boom did most of the building inside a single stretch of years, and the result is a town where a very large share of the kitchens went in at roughly the same time, from a fairly small set of builders, to a fairly small set of specifications.
That is genuinely useful, and not for the reason people assume. It does not mean we can quote from an address — we never do that anywhere. It means the failures arrive on a schedule, and after enough of these kitchens you know what to look for in a photograph before you have opened it properly.
Doors on a builder's kitchen of that period take the wear first. The finish goes thin at the two or three fronts nearest the kettle and the hob, the hinges start letting doors sit proud of one another, and a colour that was neutral in 2005 reads as dated long before anything is structurally wrong. None of that is a fault in the kitchen. It is the visible half of it doing twenty years of work.
New is not the same as well made
The trap in a town of newer housing is assuming the boxes must be fine because the house is not old. Age is not what decides it. Material and condition are, and a builder fitting out a subdivision at pace has every reason to spend the budget where it shows.
So the thing worth knowing about your own kitchen is what the carcass sides are made of. Plywood or solid-backed board takes a hinge screw again after twenty years and will take one in twenty more. Faced chipboard sometimes will not — particularly the base under the sink, where a slow supply leak nobody noticed swells the bottom and the front edge in a way that cannot be undone. A run that has racked out of square is the other one, and it usually shows in a photograph as a growing wedge of light between two doors that ought to be parallel.
