Why there is no number on this page
Every article promising what a national retailer charges to reface a kitchen is doing one of two things: quoting a figure from somewhere else in the country, or making it up.
Big-box refacing is priced per kitchen after a measure, and the work is generally carried out by a subcontracted installation crew rather than by the retailer's own staff. That means the same brand can produce genuinely different prices in two neighbouring towns, because the crew, the lead time and the local rate are all different.
So the honest position is that we do not know, and a competitor who publishes a precise figure for somebody else's quote is telling you something they cannot know either. What is knowable is what makes two quotes comparable, and that is worth more than a number anyway.
The difference that moves the price most
The single biggest variable is not the doors. It is what happens to the cabinet boxes.
There are two methods sold under the word refacing. One wraps the existing frames in a vinyl or veneer film, heat-bonded into place. It is quick, it needs little preparation, and it is the reason a quote can be startlingly low. The other sprays the frames in 2K polyurethane after preparation — slower, mostly labour, and it does not have a seam to lift.
Wrapped frames show their edges where heat and moisture reach them. The dishwasher, the kettle, the oven housing. Once the film has lifted at a corner it cannot be pressed back, and the repair is usually the whole run.
If you take one question into a showroom, take that one. Are the boxes wrapped or sprayed? The answer explains most of the gap between any two numbers in this trade.
The four questions that make quotes comparable
How many doors and drawer fronts is this priced on? Refacing is a per-front job. A quote built from the room's dimensions rather than a count is a quote that has not been worked out yet, and it will move when somebody counts properly.
Is this a price or an estimate? They are not the same document. We quote a final figure from photographs and do not revise it after a visit — ninety-nine percent of our quotes are produced that way. An estimate is permitted to move, and it generally moves in one direction.
Who is doing the installing, and who warrants it? A retailer's warranty covering a subcontractor's workmanship is a different instrument from a warranty issued by the people holding the spray gun. Ours is five years on our own work.
What is not included? Countertop templating and fabrication are contracted to stone shops, as is backsplash tiling — that is true here and true almost everywhere, and it is a common place for two quotes to differ without either being wrong.
What the timeline tells you
Price is not the only axis, and the schedule often reveals more about a quote than the total does.
Refacing runs four to five weeks end to end. Most of that is the doors being made and finished off site. The part that happens in your house is an installation week — about five days — and you are asked to be out for two or three of those while the spraying is done, because a catalysed finish is not something to be in the room for.
A quote promising the whole job in a handful of days is describing the installation week and calling it the project. That is worth clarifying rather than assuming, because a schedule that sounds better than everyone else's usually means the two of you are counting different things.
When the big-box quote is the right one
There are kitchens where it will be, and it would be dishonest to write this page as though there were not.
If the quote is for sprayed boxes, the door count is on the paper, the installer is named and the warranty covers workmanship, then it is a real quote and it should be compared on price like any other. Volume buying is real, and a national supplier can be genuinely competitive on door cost.
What we would rather you did not do is take the lowest total on the table without knowing which of the two jobs it describes. The kitchens we are called to fix are almost never the ones where somebody compared carefully and chose somebody else. They are the ones where a wrap was bought as a spray, and nobody had told the owner there was a difference.
What the work is, before comparing prices
Two quotes are only comparable once you know they describe the same job. Refacing replaces the doors, the drawer fronts and the hinges, and sprays the boxes you already have. Reading which parts of the kitchen refacing actually touches first is what makes a big-box quote legible — much of the price difference in this trade is not margin at all, it is a different scope of work wearing the same name, and the part that differs is usually the part nobody writes on the page.
The comparison that matters more than either quote
Two refacing quotes tell you who is cheaper. Neither tells you whether refacing is the right job for your kitchen, and that decision moves far more money than the gap between suppliers. Reading how refacing and replacement compare on money and on weeks is the step worth taking before choosing between quotes at all, because a kitchen that needs replacing does not get cheaper by being refaced carefully — it gets refaced twice, and the second time nobody argues about the price.
