After

The island was never painted. It did not need to be.

  • Perimeter sprayed white, island excluded
  • Granite, backsplash and floor kept
  • Existing handles reused
  1. The kitchen before the work, espresso cabinetry running the full perimeter and continuing into a large matching island

    01

Espresso everywhere, island included, which is how the room was built and why it read heavy. The granite and the stone backsplash were fine. The problem was that there was no relief anywhere — every surface at eye level was the same dark brown.

  2. The finished kitchen with a white perimeter and the original espresso island standing in the middle of it

    02

The estimate says it in two words — excludes island. Everything round the edge went to the booth and came back white; the island stayed exactly as it was. That is a two-tone kitchen for the price of one colour, and it works because the island was never the thing that dated.

  3. The finished room seen from the hallway, white perimeter cabinetry framing the dark island with the tile floor and granite unchanged

    03

Handles reused, granite kept, backsplash kept, floor kept. The only thing that left the house was the perimeter doors, for ten days. Leaving something alone is a decision — it just does not appear on an invoice.
