THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO PROFESSIONAL KITCHEN CABINET PAINTING: FROM START TO FINISH

Are you thinking about updating your kitchen’s look without a full remodel?

Cabinet repainting and kitchen cabinets refinishing are excellent ways to give your space a fresh, modern appearance without the cost and hassle of replacing everything.

At Kitchen Made New, we specialize in transforming kitchens through cabinet painting and refinishing.

Here’s a look at our typical cabinet repainting process and how we address common concerns, costs to repaint your kitchen and ensuring you’re delighted with the final result.

What is Cabinet Painting?

Cabinet painting is a service that repaints your kitchen, bathroom, or other cabinets for a new look and feel.

It is also quite economical compared to a full replacement, especially if the cabinets are very good and structurally sound.

Kitchen cabinet painting is ideal for:

  • Homeowners seeking a cost-effective update with versatile color options.
  • Cabinets in good shape but need a fresh color scheme.

However, the existing kitchen cabinet doors must be made of a material that can be painted. Common materials that are NOT suitable for painting include, Thermofoil and Melamine. In this case, cabinet refacing is a better option for you

Contrary to popular belief, repainting cabinet doors to achieve a factory finish is not a DIY project. Not every painter is good enough to pull that off; it requires years of experience and an investment in machinery and equipment worth a fortune to do the job right.

The original kitchen featured a 20-year-old builder-grade solid maple design. The finish showed significant wear and discoloration, but the doors, made from solid maple wood, were in excellent condition. All this kitchen needed was a fresh coat of paint.

Additionally, the kitchen had limited countertop working space, with many small appliances cluttering the area and taking up valuable surface space.

Project Details

We designed a kitchen extension to provide our client with more countertop workspace and additional storage. The new cabinet door profile perfectly matched the existing doors and was painted in Benjamin Moore’s “Chantilly Lace”, creating a bright, transitional look and feel.

We also built a new peninsula with decorative back and side panels. It was moved back by 12 inches to provide more walking space, making meal preparation in the kitchen more comfortable and efficient.

Project Timelines

  • Design and Measurements: Using the room measurements, we created a new kitchen floor plan with a 3D rendering to propose the layout (*Approx. 1 week*).
  • Millwork: We will begin manufacturing of new cabinetry and doors once design approval from the client is received (*Approx. 2 weeks*).
  • Workshop Spray Painting: We took out the old doors and drawers, transported them to our workshop for repainting together with the new doors. All parts were spray-painted in a two-part, solvent-based polyurethane paint to ensure maximum strength and durability in the finish. *Approx. 2 weeks*
  • On-Site Spray Painting: We covered the kitchen floors, took off the old countertop, and spray-painted the structure of the kitchen on site. Approx. *1 week*
  • On-Site Installation of New Cabinetry: Once the on-site spray painting was completed, we installed the new cabinetry, along with new pot lights and under-cabinet LED lighting. (*Approx. 1 week*)
  • Countertop Installation: Finally, the countertop, backsplash, and plumbing were installed (*Approx. 1 week*).

Total Timeline: 8 weeks from start to finish.

PREP WORK – THE BASE FOR A PERFECT RESULT

Preparation is everything in kitchen cabinet painting. The time spent on degreasing, filling cracks, repairing, and sanding represents over 70% of the project’s total time in relation to the kitchen cabinet painting cost.

It is very important that your kitchen be prepared onsite to keep overspray from getting on your walls, ceiling, floors, countertops, and appliances. We also construct a dust barrier wall with negative air pressure to prevent dust from circulating throughout the home.

The biggest thing that people usually bring up is how things will interrupt your everyday life, so we try to stay on top of everything by keeping the workspace clean and orderly, and your kitchen is protected from dust or debris.

We start any project by carefully removing all the cabinet doors and hardware and transporting them back to our workshop for processing. Everything is labeled for easy reassembly.

Back at the shop, we address any imperfections: things like scratches or dents. If your cabinets need repairs or glue-ups, we take care of those so that the surface is level and smooth for painting. Degreasing and sanding operations come next in line before painting.

PRIMING – SETTING UP FOR SUCCESS

Next, after the cabinets are prepared, we apply a good primer that’s made especially for kitchen-cabinet reconditioning. This is a very crucial step when painting kitchen cabinets, since it helps them last longer.

It makes paint stick better so there is less likelihood of damage; it also prevents stains or wood patterns from showing through (AKA bleeding) and provides a perfect look for re-fixing or painting kitchen cupboards.

SPRAY PAINTING

We apply multiple coats of high-quality paint, letting each dry completely. If you are sensitive to odors, we will use low-VOC, environmentally friendly paints that are safe and leave very little lingering odor.

We help you choose the colors: vivid shades or just plain neutral ones, to ensure that your cabinet painting will be with a smooth and perfect surface.

FINISHING TOUCHES AND REASSEMBLY

Once the paint is completely dry, we carefully put back all the cabinet doors and hardware, making sure each piece fits just right.

We make sure every detail meets our quality standard, from the alignment to the smoothness of finish.

We put it back all together, being meticulous, so your kitchen cabinets will look new and shiny. They will work great for years.
