The drawer heights came from what goes in them. The client drew the contents.

• Refinished pure white, with no yellow in it
• Seven new drawer boxes on soft-close slides, sized to what they hold
• Two doors made for the microwave cabinet, and a valance added

   Two cabinets drawn out, thirty and a quarter inches and twenty-six and five sixteenths, divided into drawers of four and a half inches and nine. What makes it unusual is what is drawn inside them — ladles, bottles, seasonings, a stack of pans, a pot. The heights were decided by the contents, not chosen from a standard and filled afterwards. The notes at the foot settle the rest — pure white with no yellow tint, bar handles on the new drawers, nothing on the old ones.

   The microwave in a hole. Whoever built this kitchen left the opening bare, and it has sat like that ever since — the one part of the run with nothing across the front of it. Two doors were made to close it, matched to a cathedral arch profile that was never going to be found in a catalogue.

   The finished galley, and the two things to look for are both absences. There is no open recess any more, and no shadow gap under the uppers — a valance runs the length of them now. The kitchen did not get bigger; it got finished.
