The doors arrived in their colour. Everything else had to be matched to them.

  1. A handwritten schedule of every door and drawer front in the kitchen, each with its measurements and a tick once it had been checked

    Every door and drawer front, measured and listed before anything was ordered. Thermofoil is made to size and cannot be trimmed on site — the film is wrapped around the edge, so cutting a door opens it up. A wrong number here is a new door, not an adjustment.

    Espresso, with a wine rack built into the end of the island and two runs of open shelving. All three came back as cabinets with doors on them, which is most of what changed about how the room works.

    A new door on the box that was always there. The handles are the client's own — the same pulls came off the espresso doors and went back onto the white ones, which means the new fronts were drilled to holes that already existed.

  4. The finished kitchen — white doors throughout, the same granite counters and the same tiled floor as before

    Thermofoil colours are premade, so the doors could not be mixed to the room. We matched paint to the door instead and sprayed the boxes, frames and panels on site. One colour, reached from two directions. The granite stayed.
